ResumoThe formation of oospores by Bremia lactucae Regel in detached cotyledons and seedlings of Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) cv. Trocadero Improved is described. Antheridia were attached perigynously to oogonia, and meiotic division of the nuclei in both structures occurred during their development. Fertilization was achieved when a single antheridial nucleus migrated through a sigmoid fertilization tube into the oosphere and fused with the single egg nucleus. Other oogonial nuclei were confined to the periplasm which degenerated as the thick-walled oospore matured.
