Resumo

AbstractDistributed simulation is used very little in industry, especially when compared with the interest in distributed simulation from research and from the military domain. In order to answer the question why industry lags behind, the authors have carried out an extensive survey, namely a questionnaire targeted at vendors of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) simulation packages and a series of open-ended interviews with experts on distributed simulation. Analysis of the answers obtained establish that it is indeed the case that industry is relatively underdeveloped in the area of distributed simulation and also sheds light on the reasons behind this. A categorization of these responses is given using which it is possible to formulate clear guidelines for further developments of standards for distributed simulation. Keywords: simulationdistributed simulationHLACOTS simulation packageindustrymilitary This article is part of the following collections: Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Journal of Simulation Appendix—AbbreviationsALSP Aggregate-Level Simulation ProtocolCOM Component Object ModelCORBA Common Object Request Broker ArchitectureCOTS Commercial-Off-The-ShelfCSPI PDG COTS Simulation Package Interoperability Product Development GroupDCOM Distributed Component Object ModelDIS Distributed Interactive SimulationDMSO Defence Modelling and Simulation OfficeDoD Department of DefenceESIW European Simulation Interoperability WorkshopESM The European Simulation and Modelling ConferenceFOM Federation Object ModelHLA High-Level ArchitectureHLA-CSPIF The High-Level Architecture Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Simulation Package Interoperability ForumOMT Object Model TemplatePADS Parallel and Distributed SimulationRTI Run Time InfrastructureSIMNET SIMulator NETworkingSOM Simulation Object ModelSISO Simulation Interoperability Standards OrganizationSIW Simulation Interoperability WorkshopTOMACS Transactions on Modelling and Computer SimulationWSC Winter Simulation ConferenceAppendix—AbbreviationsALSP Aggregate-Level Simulation ProtocolCOM Component Object ModelCORBA Common Object Request Broker ArchitectureCOTS Commercial-Off-The-ShelfCSPI PDG COTS Simulation Package Interoperability Product Development GroupDCOM Distributed Component Object ModelDIS Distributed Interactive SimulationDMSO Defence Modelling and Simulation OfficeDoD Department of DefenceESIW European Simulation Interoperability WorkshopESM The European Simulation and Modelling ConferenceFOM Federation Object ModelHLA High-Level ArchitectureHLA-CSPIF The High-Level Architecture Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Simulation Package Interoperability ForumOMT Object Model TemplatePADS Parallel and Distributed SimulationRTI Run Time InfrastructureSIMNET SIMulator NETworkingSOM Simulation Object ModelSISO Simulation Interoperability Standards OrganizationSIW Simulation Interoperability WorkshopTOMACS Transactions on Modelling and Computer SimulationWSC Winter Simulation ConferenceAcknowledgementsWe thank the commercial-off-the-shelf simulation package vendors for participating in the questionnaire survey, the simulation experts for the useful discussions during the interview survey, and two anonymous referees for their constructive remarks.
