Resumo

One of the main purposes of this year's World Leprosy Day on Jan 25, 2009, is to address the stigma that still surrounds this potentially disfiguring disease. The Fourth International Stigma Conference on Jan 21–23, 2009, in London, UK, “will include a number of presentations on leprosy-related stigma”, says Douglas Soutar (International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations, London, UK). A day to remember leprosyTo coincide with World Leprosy Day on Jan 25, a Newsdesk feature in this issue by Kathryn Senior highlights the stigma that still surrounds the victims of this ancient disease. Although efforts promoted by WHO have gone a long way to eliminating leprosy as a public-health problem, there may be barriers to achieving and sustaining elimination in countries that still have a high burden of disease.
