One of the main purposes of this year's World Leprosy Day on Jan 25, 2009, is to address the stigma that still surrounds this potentially disfiguring disease. The Fourth International Stigma Conference on Jan 21–23, 2009, in London, UK, “will include a number of presentations on leprosy-related stigma”, says Douglas Soutar (International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations, London, UK). Although efforts promoted by WHO have gone a long way to eliminating leprosy as a public-health problem, there may be barriers to achieving and sustaining elimination in countries that still have a high burden of disease.
