Motto has been on the faculty of the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco, since 1956. For the past six years, he has been Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at San Francisco General Hospital, where he also teaches. His primary interest is studying depressive states and the associated clinical problem of suicidal behavior; he is active in local, national, and international suicide prevention organizations. His current work includes developing assessment scales for suicide risk, suicide prevention programs for high-risk persons who refuse treatment, and therapy groups for depressed and suicidal persons.
