Resumo'It's just like a museum' is the description often used to characterise heritage town centres. But how can 'museality' be defined for the urban context? The labelling of historic towns as being museum like is used by marketing professionals to describe positive characteristics of outstanding quality and by some urbanists to condemn the negative results of transformation processes such as gentrification and disneyfication. This paper presents a definition for museality in the urban context and a method to document museality and the process of musealisation. The method was applied in three case studies in Spanish-colonial World Heritage Towns (Trinidad in Cuba, Guanajuato in Mexico and Vigan in the Philippines) and led to the identification of a set of museality patterns that may serve to consider the issue of museality in development plans for heritage town centres.
