ResumoThe electrochemical behavior of nine α-β unsaturated aldehydes has been investigated. All seven compounds having alkyl substituents exhibit a single polarographic wave. Acrolein and sorbaldehyde exhibit multiple waves, the most positive of which (like the waves of the alkyl compounds) result from the reduction of the anhydrous aldehyde by a one-electron, one-proton process. The second waves of acrolein and sorbaldehyde both appear to arise from the one-electron reduction of the species formed by hydration of the α-β double bond. The free radicals formed by these processes initiate head-to-tail polymerization of the aldehydes.
