ResumoPossibilities for development of contraceptive modalities which would act at the tubal level are considered. Tubal transport mechanisms are reviewed, and approaches which would alter sperm and/or ovum transport are discussed. Such alternatives could be initiated through modification in ciliary or muscular action, or both. The constituents of oviductal fluid which could influence capacitation, fertilization and early development are reviewed. The role of specific components, such as bicarbonate, calcium, lactate and enzyme inhibitors, is considered and possibilities of altering this environment so as to affect adversely the processes which occur within it are reviewed. Throughout, areas of incomplete information are evident, emphasizing the importance of additional efforts to evaluate tubal function and its control.
