Resumo

Ground states and saddle points of the heavy elements thorium to fermium are calculated with a modified liquid-drop formula including curvature and shell-energy corrections. Intrinsic quadrupole moments and barrier energies are compared with experimental data. Relative moments of inertia at the saddle point are computed. We allow three degrees of freedom, e.g. elongation, asymmetry and constriction, which are at the saddle point equivalent to the three normal modes of oscillation, e.g. fission, asymmetry and vibration. The normal stiffnesses and normal masses of these modes are presented. Fission-barrier curvatures are compared with those achieved by experiments. Statistics of the initial coordinates in the vicinity of the saddle are performed for low-energy fission of heavy elements.
