ResumoThe boron content of Keuper continental deposits ("Knollenmergel") of southwest Germany is determined. These beds represent red-bed facies and are supposed to have been deposited in periodically desiccating lakes. Higher boron content of these deposits is probably an effect of the hot, dry climate, leading to the conclusion that boron-enrichment in sediments not only depends upon the salinity of the depositing medium, but the climate too plays an important role in its concentration. It may become difficult to interpret the palaeosalinity on the basis of boron content, without accounting for the climatic effects. Boron content of the clay fraction shows a direct relationship with the clay-mineral association. Some horizons, rich in carbonate nodules, with extreme high values for carbonate show high boron content. It suggests that boron in sediments may also become enriched in carbonates, forming some complex with calcium carbonate. Boron content of the upper decolourised zone of "Knollenmergel" has not been affected by the reducing waters of the Liassic sea.
