Resumo

Abstract The outer solvation sphere of an ion partaking in an outer sphere electron transfer reaction is viewed as an ensemble of polarizable dipoles. The formalism of Mandel and Mazur is used to derive expressions for the generating function and the energy of reorganization in terms of averages over molecular quantities. On passing to the continuum representation the results are shown to be equivalent to the theories of Marcus and Hush. The relation of the present work to the polaron model and to the work of Bockris and Sen are also discussed.
