ResumoAbstract. - « Middle mountain » designates either an altitudinal belt or the whole of a definite mountain, which stretches, for its major part, though possibly no entirely, throughout the said belt. The lower as well as the upper limit are discussed in the paper. - In the middle mountain, at least at mid latitudes, frost, at the present time, plays a moderate part ; agricultural erosion is active and consequently lynchets are a usual feature. - Different types of middle mountains may be distinguished according to the combination of four factors : altitude, slope gradient, isolation and cohesion of the rural society (examples taken in the French Central Massif).
