ResumoAbstractA species of Synechocystis has been found in association with two ascidian species belonging to the family Didemnidae in the north-western Mediterranean Sea. Structurally, three zones are apparent: In the peripheral layer there is a band of closely joined thylakoids; in the median region of the cells the thylakoids appear swollen and form pseudovacuoles; the central region of the cells is occupied by a single, large pseudovacuole. The nuclear material appears scattered in several regions at the cell periphery. Major components of the pigment complement include chlorophyll α, β-carotene zeaxanthin, together with a phycoerythrin formed by phycoerythrobilin-like chromophores. The systematic position of the alga in relation to other Synechocystis species and related entities is discussed.
