ResumoAbstract Several processes have been used within the aerospace industry to construct structural high-temperature components from pure rhenium metal. These processes have several problems, including high cost, wasted machined material, and inconsistent mechanical properties. These problems have cast some doubt on the usefulness of an exceptional structural metal like rhenium. This paper discusses two new processes developed by AlliedSignal that minimize these problems, making use of this space age material more economically and minimizing risk.
