Resumo

This article proposes a sociological analysis of the history and construction of the Maringá Cathedral. It is a symbol of the power of the Catholic Church, but its construction is not unrelated to political strategies and local interests. This paper intends to analyze the cathedral in three aspects: the combination of Catholic values and institutional ideals and modernity, visible in the architecture itself; the relevance of the construction project for local interests; and its role in the trajectory of Dom Jaime Luiz Coelho, the main articulator of the work. The analysis of documents and events related to the construction of the building shows a series of relationships and discussions that contribute to the understanding of the meaning of the cathedral, not only for the Church, but also for the city of Maringá.
