ResumoAbstract The exudate gum fromAcacia mearnsii contains residues of D -galactose, L -arabinose, L -rhamnose, and D -glucuronic acid (in part, as the 4-methyl ether). Graded hydrolysis with acid affords mixtures of neutral and acidic oligosaccharides, including 6-O-(β- D -glucopyranosyluronic acid)- D -galactose, 6-O-(4-O-methyl-β- D -glucopyranosyluronic acid)- D -galactose, 3- and 6-O-β- D -galactopyranosyl- D -galactose, and 3-O-β- L -arabinopyranosyl- L -arabinose. A structure is proposed for the gum in the light of these results and of the examination of cleavage products from methylated derivatives of the native polysaccharide, a degraded polysaccharide formed on autohydrolysis, and a degraded galactan formed on further degradation of the periodate-oxidised, degraded polysaccharide. A structural comparison is made between this gum collected in Jamaica and the gum from the same species collected in South Africa. No major structural differences have been detected between the two gum samples.
