SYNOPSIS Formalin, acrolein, or controlled chromation do not retain maize oil or butter during embedding. Post‐chromation after calcium formol fixation retains some butter and much maize oil, but the fixation is not uniform. Sudan Black B and Sudan IV stain these lipids for electron microscopy. These stains do not contain atoms of high atomic weight. The double bonds of unsaturated lipids are stained by floating the sections on osmium tetroxide solutions, or by exposing the sections to ultra‐voilet light and then staining them with Schiff's reagent in the presence of a source of copper.
