Abstract A necessary condition for the occurrence of a convective core in a star is derived. It is shown that late G dwarfs, K dwarfs, and M dwarfs, probably including the sun, cannot have convective cores but must be in radiative equilibrium at their centers. Main-sequence stars of somewhat earlier type may or may not have convective cores, while dwarfs earlier than F5 are already known to have convective cores.
