ResumoReaction of Merrifield's peptide resin with the sodium anion of furfuryl alcohol provides a furan-functionalized polymer resin. This polymer reacts rapidly with C60 to provide a fullerene-substituted polymer, presumably via Diels-Alder reaction, with the furan as diene and the fullerene as dienophile. This resin is greater than two-fold more efficient in C60 uptake, and provides a 66% increase in C60 release upon heating, compared with the previously reported cyclopentadiene-functionalized resin.
