ResumoActive nitrogen fixing nodules of seven species of Andira were collected in the field in Brazil. They showed indeterminate growth, a cortex containing many sclereids and vascular bundles with numerous thick walled xylem elements. The infected cells were packed with infection threads in which the rhizobia were retained. This is the first observation of this infected cell type in a legume nodule, and it may represent a primitive stage in evolution.
