ResumoABSTRACT The con cen tra tion of three marker com pounds in Echinacea angustifolia, echinacoside, undeca-2E/Z-en 8, 10-diyonic acid isobutyl -amide (alkamide 1), and dodeca-2E, 4E, 8Z, 10E/Z-tetraenoic acid isobutylamide (alkamide 2), as a func tion of root depth was quan ti fied. These com pound con cen tra tions were con stant for echinacoside and alkamide 1, but de creased with root depth for alkamide 2. E. angustifolia root-har vest ing prac tices could there fore be based on root mass max i mi-za tion. Cul ti va tion in sandy loam soil re sulted in a sig nif i cantly greater mass of alkamide 2 than in soil with higher con cen tra tions of clay and silt par ti cles. Di rect-seed ing pro duced greater masses of echinacoside, alkamide 1, and alkamide 2 over trans plant ing. The three-year plant age pro -vided greater masses of echinacoside, alkamide 1, and alkamide 2 when com pared to the two-year-old plants.
