The development of Botrytis cinerea in irradiated strawberries during storage

ResumoAbstract The effect of 60 Co gamma rays on the keeping quality of three strawberry varieties was studied with naturally infected fruit from the field and with fruit artificially inoculated with spores of Botrytis cinerea . A dose of 100 krad caused a slight reduction of rot incidence in uninoculated fruit stored under suitable conditions for fungal rot development (15°C). This reduction was less noticeable on fruit stored at 0°C and later held at 15°C for shelf-life. The same dose reduced decay of artificially inoculated fruit for only 2 days of shelf-life following cold storage. An extension of shelf-life to 4 days enabled fungal recovery and resulted in a considerable rise in rot incidence. A dose of 200 krad was much more effective than 100 krad with both inoculated and noninoculated fruit, in prolonging the incubation period of the fungus in the fruit and in reducing the incidence of decay. The efficiency of a 200-krad dose was still considerable after a prolonged shelf-life of 4 days at room temperature, following cold storage.
