Resumo

Certain anhydrous metal nitrates, in which the nitrate group is covalently bonded to the metal, react with graphite to form intercalation compounds (GICs). GICs have been prepared with the nitrates of copper, zinc, cobalt, iron, aluminum, gallium, indium, titanium, and with the oxynitrates of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. Several aspects of the preparation, the stoichiometry and the structure of GICs with the nitrato compounds of iron(III), cobalt(III) and chromyl are discussed. Graphite chromyl nitrate can also be prepared by intralamellar reactions: treatment of graphite-CrO3 or graphite-CrO2Cl2 with N2O5 yields graphite-CrO2(NO3)2. A concept for the intercalation mechanism is proposed.
