Resumo

Abstract This article offers an overview of the growth of electoral support in France for the Front National [FN] and of the political biography of its leader, Jean‐Marie Le Pen. It argues that the extreme right has become a permanent feature of French politics and offers an explanation of why it is that the FN moved to the centre of the political stage in France during the 1980s. The explanation places particular emphasis upon the shifting balance of political forces against the background of the economic crisis that emerged in the early 1970s.
