ResumoWe present a model which resolves the strong CP problem by the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism and at the same time provides a natural explanation to the fermion mass hierarchy. Only the third generation quarks acquire masses at the tree level due to the PQ symmetry present in the model; the second and first generation quark masses arise as one-loop and two-loop radiative corrections, respectively. The coupling of the axion in the model to the second and third generation quarks is three to four orders of magnitude larger than in conventional invisible axion models.
