Resumo"When I retire", a surgeon told a historian, "I plan to be a medical historian". The historian replied that when he retired he planned to practise neuropathology. When this exchange is retold, academic historians generally find it amusing, confirming their preconceptions about physicians. Physicians, by contrast, often react to the historian's reply with quizzical incredulity; they don't get the joke. How, they wonder, can a historian practise medicine without proper training? Of course, that is the historian's point as well.
