The strengths of the various interactions in the 4f7(8S) nln'l' configurations of Eu I and Gd II are defined and calculated. They are then used to determine for each of these configurations the coupling scheme closest to the physical coupling. In all cases, the coupling schemes thus determined are confirmed through the comparison of the composition percentages of the eigenvectors in the various possible coupling schemes. It is shown that configuration interaction also affects the couplings within the configurations.
