Abstract Widespread acceptance of artificially generated speech will occur only when speech synthesis offers high quality speech, automatic text to speech conversion with unlimited vocabulary, operates real-time and at a very low cost. This paper describes three basic methods used for artificial speech synthesis and the resulting software and hardware architecture and the implementation of the method supporting an unlimited Dutch vocabulary. The hardware is based on a combination of an Intel 80286 CPU and a TMS 32010 Digital Signal Processor.
