ResumoThe interpretation that the nighttime Lyman α observed from rockets is solar Lyman α that has been transported to the night side by the earth's extensive hydrogen envelope (the ‘geocorona’) is considered in detail. The equations of radiation transfer are solved for several spherically symmetric models of the hydrogen distribution. The numerical results for the integrated Lyman α night glow are compared with the observations. Radiation transfer in models whose total hydrogen abundance is consistent with daytime absorption measurements is shown to be inadequate in accounting for the observed night glow features.
