Resumo

A morbid, almost mystical fear of rabies is not uncommon, particularly among city dwellers who are rarely in contact with wild animals. On the other hand, hunters, foresters, dogcatchers, veterinarians and others who are in frequent contact with animals often display such a cavalier attitude that they forget having been licked or bitten by animals, including bats — second only to skunks as vectors of rabies.1 Such a course may have occurred in Case 1, described by Houff and his colleagues in this issue of the Journal.
