Resumo

The behaviour of a non-abelian gauge theory containing fermions in a nonsimply connected space-time with spatial topology S1 × R2 is studied uisng the background-field method. It is shown that the existence of inequivalent spin connections is not essential for the stability of the vanishing gauge field in contrast to the situation in QED. Comments are made concerning the inclusion of scalar fields.
