ResumoAbstractAbstractThe characterization of rapidly solidified powders, their extrusion, and the evaluation of mechanical properties of the extrudates have been carried out for an Al–5Fe–7 Mn alloy. In the atomized powder, a metastable non–stoichiometric phase has been identified which transforms to the equilibrium (FeMn)Al6 phase on heating at elevated temperatures (<400°C). It has been found that inhomogeneous dispersoid distribution and coarsening of phases during preheat causes deterioration of mechanical properties, both at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. It is suggested that control of atomization parameters and use of rapid heating of compacts may be essential to improve the mechanical properties.MST/174
