ResumoJoachim Barrande died on 5th October 1883, at the Chateau of Frohsdorf, near Vienna. A few months previously the Comte de Chambord, who had been to him pupil, friend, patron, and rightful sovereign, had died at the same residence. Both names are associated with the temporary stay of the exiled Bourbon Charles X. at Holyrood Palace. Barrande was elected one of our Honorary Fellows in 1870. Doubtless old recollections of that visit to Edinburgh induced our lamented associate to manifest a magnificent liberality in the distribution of his literary works and memoirs to the Society, as well as to individual members. Barrande had a many-sided public character. He was both a politician and administrator of his dethroned master’s finance as well as a scientist. The homage at his funeral of almost the entire population of the usually quiet town of Prague, in Bohemia, was the impressive verdict of that public amongst whom he had so long dwelt, whilst his name appears for highest praise in the biographies of his most distinguished scientific contemporaries. ‶What a noble character!″ was the first impression of Sir Roderick Murchison on making his acquaintance. The various portraits of him show a tall commanding gait; the physiognomy exhibits mildness combined with firmness; while patience and enthusiasm have left their well-defined marks on the aged features. Barrande was born in 1799 in the town of Sangues, department of Haute Loire. He graduated with high honours as an officer of engineers in 1824, at Paris. During five years
