ResumoWilliam John Bankes (1786–1855) travelled extensively throughout the orient but this article will concentrate on his journeys within the Decapolis area in the years 1816 and 1818. His accounts of this area cover Kanawat (Canatha), Umm Qais (Gadara), Jerash (Gerasa), Amman (Philadelphia), Baysan (Scythopolis) and to a lesser extent Abila. Bankes' papers, now at the Dorset County Record Office, include sketch plans, views, descriptions, historical and architectural discourses and copies of a number of inscriptions, four of which are noted here for the first time.
