Urban Development and Societal Issues

This paper reviews the motivation and the characters involved in the process of building a new capital for the State of Goiás, moving it from old Vila Boa to new built Goiânia. Several reasons for the building of the new city, from the standpoint of urban planning, have been investigated, each one of them proposed in different periods. A brief account on urban planning in Colonial Brazil enlightens the primary motivation and efforts for the occupation of the vast brazilian hinterland, a process in which the construction of towns had a central importance, and to which Goiania owes its life.
