Resumo

Allatectomy in the final instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis resulted in miniature adults. Ablation of the corpora allata from the fifth instar larvae, however, led to premature pupation omitting the sixth instar. The pharate pupae obtained ecdysed into midget pupae that did not develop into adults. Mated with intact (unoperated) males, the females obtained from allatectomized larvae did not oviposit, whereas intact females mated with males obtained from larvae deprived of their corpora allata deposited non-viable eggs. The importance of the corpus allatum in reproduction of this insect and perhaps of other Lepidoptera is discussed in favour of its indirect effect through the prothoracic glands.
