ResumoAbstract Background: The academic community needs a sound framework for the promotion and advancement of educators. The Group on Educational Affairs of the Association of American Medical Colleges organized a consensus conference that affirmed the use of five domains for documenting the quantity and quality of scholarly engagement in educational activities: teaching, curriculum, advising/mentoring, educational leadership/administration, and learner assessment. Summary: In this article, we offer detailed guidelines to evaluate these five domains of educator performance and the essential elements of scholarly activity. The guidelines are adapted from our developmental educator portfolio template and educator portfolio analysis tool, previously published in MedEdPORTAL. A short tool for educator performance evaluation that summarizes items in the guidelines is proposed for discussion. Conclusions: Our goal in this article is to itemize criteria for systematic faculty evaluation that can be applied in any institutional setting to assist promotion decision makers in their task of evaluating medical school faculty. Acknowledgments We thank the faculty of the Academic Pediatric Association's Educational Scholars Program, who have worked hard to develop an educator portfolio template and analysis tools that have contributed to the guidelines presented in this article. In addition, we are grateful to a group of distinguished educators, convened by the Association of American Medical Colleges, for their review of our EP analysis tool and recommendation to develop that tool into simple and adaptable guidelines for evaluation of educators. Notes The authors are directors of the Educational Scholars Program, a competitive national faculty development and certification program for pediatric educators with a 3-year curriculum. The Educational Scholars Program supports a mentored educational project and culminates in certification after successful completion of a peer-reviewed publication or national presentation. The EP template is used to help the scholars plan and document their educational careers, and the EP analysis tool is used to measure program outcomes. Examples of major educational professional development programs are the Harvard Macy Program for Educators in the Health Professions, the Michigan State University Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship Program, the Stanford Faculty Development Program, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics’ Academic Scholars and Leaders Program, and the Academic Pediatric Association's Educational Scholars Program. MedEdPortal is a national peer-reviewed repository of educational products developed and maintained by the Association of American Medical Colleges (accessible at http://www.aamc.org/mededportal).
