Resumo

Line contact between two elastic cylinders, one having a rough surface modelled as a periodic waviness is considered. The effects of asperity tip radius and characteristic wavelength on the surface and subsurface stress states are found, and the conditions under which St. Venant’s principle may be invoked determined. The reduction in surface strength compared with smooth contact is quantified and is found to be very sensitive to the tip curvature of the asperities.
