ResumoThe curves of ionization current against voltage have been measured in several gases and gas mixtures at atmospheric pressure under constant irradiation in a parallel-plate chamber in order to determine the conditions required for stable avalanche amplification in narrow gaps. This method of amplifying the charge pattern in an image-forming ion chamber has been proposed by Reiss (1965). Some limitations which are inherent in the use of avalanche amplification are discussed.
