ResumoUrsula Oppens, a pianist who has commissioned and premiered solo works from diverse American composers including Anthony Braxton, Elliott Carter, Conlon Nancarrow, Frederic Rzewski, and Christian Wolff, came from an intensely musical background. Her father, a piano technician, wrote program notes, and mother was a pianist who had studied with Webern. Having worked with Carter while still in high school, Oppens became a founding member of Speculum Musicae. The Pianist reminisces on her appearances at festivals including Aspen and Marlborough, performers and composers who have influenced her, and her relationship to jazz, improvisation and the saxophonist Julius Hemphill.
