Blood Platelets ‐ their Relationship to the Blood Clotting System and to Hemostasis: A Review

Summary Blood platelets contain several factors which interfere with the plasmatic clotting system; on the other hand the enzyme thrombin, formed in the course of the coagulation process, interacts with the platelets, thereby inducing important changes in the behaviour and structure of these cells. These changes are a prerequisit for the proper platelet function in hemostasis and thrombosis, as well as in the coagulation process. The relationship of the platelets to vascular integrity and their properties in the circulating blood are briefly discussed and it is mentioned that metabolic activity of the “viable” platelet is intimately linked to all these manifestations of platelet activity. Résumé D'une part, les plaquettes sanguines contiennent toute une série de facteurs qui interviennent dans les processus de Coagulation plasmatique; d'autre part, la formation de la thrombine au cours de la coagulation doit être rendue responsable des modifications morphologiques et fonctionnelles du comportement plaquettaire. C'est sur l'interaction réciproque du système de coagulation et des plaquettes que repose le rô1e particulier joué par les plaquettes dans l'hémostase et la thrombose et, par voie de conséquence, sur le systhme vasculaire et les phénomèes circulatoires. L'activité métabolique des plaquettes «vivantes» joue un rôle de premier plan dans toutes ces fonctions. Zusammenfassung Die Blutplättchen enthalten einerseits eine ganze Reihe von Faktoren, die in den plasmatischen Gerinnungsprozeß eingreifen; anderseits ist die Entstehung des Fermentes Thrombin im Laufe der Blutgerinnung für die charakteristischen und für ihre Funktion entscheidenden Änderungen im Verhalten der Plättchen verantwortlich zu machen. Auf diesem Zwischenspiel zwischen Gerinnungssystem und Plättchen basiert deren besondere Rolle bei der Blutstillung und Thrombose, sowie auch ihre Beziehungen zum Gefäßsystem und ihr Verhalten im Kreislauf. Bei all diesen Funktionen spielt die Stoffwechselaktivität der «lebenden» Plättchen eine hervorragende Rolle.
