Resumo

Synopsis In Shetland sub-glacially formed meltwater channels are almost confined to two small areas in the north of the islands of Yell and Unst. These two areas are almost devoid of glacial striae and till, both of which are widely distributed throughout the rest of Shetland, indicating that the whole area was covered by ice during the last glacial maximum. The restriction of the meltwater channels to these small areas shows that they were formed before the downwasting stage and, therefore, probably at the ice front.
