Resumo

The freshwater gammarids described in this paper appear to be nearly related to the subspecies Gammarus pulex pulex but differ from it in the absence of the setose brush on the flagellum of the second antenna in the male. But they must not be mistaken for mere variations of either G. pulex pulex or G. pulex fossarum. For their morphological and biometric individuality is proved by a very definite genetic unity. In no case, during the trials of interbreeding between these amphipods and the two subspecies G. p. pulex and G. p. fossarum, was it possible to obtain young hybrid specimens although egg laying and the beginning of development were sometimes observed.
