Abstract In the presence of stannous fluoride, 2,2,2-tribromoethanols are conveniently prepared from aldehydes and carbontetrabromide under a mild reaction condition. The reaction is efficiently applied to the synthesis of 2,3-diacetyl-d-erythronolactone starting from 2,3-O-isopropylidene-d-glyceraldehyde.
