ResumoThe maxillary arches of two monkeys were irradiated with cobalt-60 in therapeutic doses ranging from 3,000 to 7,013 rads. The pulps of twenty-three permanent teeth extracted periodically were studied microscopically. Four nonirradiated mandibular teeth served as controls, and nineteen maxillary teeth were irradiated at levels approximating 3,000, 5,000, and 7,000 rads as well as 7,000 rads plus 1 month and 7,000 rads plus 2 months. After extraction, the teeth were sectioned and studied microscopically. No histologic differences in the dental tissues due to radiation at any dose level or interval were detected. Cobalt-60 radiation in a dose range up to 7,013 rads had no demonstrable adverse effect on the dental pulps of mature permanent teeth of monkeys.
