ResumoThis paper describes the analysis of photovoltaic surface and the photovoltaic characteristics of CdS solar cells fabricated by electroplating copper onto CdS single crystals. The spectral response of the cells resembled to that of photocurrent in copper doped CdS single crystals irrespective of the conduction types of the surface treated by several methods and the capacitance of the cells did not depend on the bias voltage. These features of the cells can be explained in terms of Mott barrier layer existing near the electroplated surface and the photo-generation of carriers excited from the copper states in the insulating layer of CdS. It is concluded that the copper diffused insulating layer plays the main role of the photovoltaic effect and the location of the Fermi level at the surface of CdS is determined by the levels of copper substituted in CdS.
