Resumo

A semi-quantitative determination of the distribution of internal flaws in precursor polymer fibre has led to a prediction of internal flaw frequency in 'Acrilan' carbon fibres. Using specialised techniques of fibre etching and fractography it has been shown that when internal flaws occur within the test gauge length and cause fracture then carbon fibre strength is lowered. It is concluded that internal polymer flaws are operative in restricting strength of the carbonised fibre and that complete removal of such flaws could give higher strength and less scatter in the fibre strength distribution.
