ResumoAbstract Bizet's opera Carmen may be profitably explored through the metaphor of the Corrida de toros or Spanish bullfight. Though this image has been invoked by other critics to focus on Don José's pursuing and slaying of Carmen, the reverse application—with Carmen the artful matador and José the enraged bull—draws attention to aspects of the opera that have been relatively neglected, notably the hero's gradual psychological disintegration. This reading is supported by observations about melodic and harmonic procedures.
