ResumoPeritonitis is an inflammatory process of the peritoneum, usually secondary to infection. However, it represents the response of the body to many inflammatory stimuli. A comprehensive classification system is needed for both clinical investigation and basic research. Anatomic and functional aspects need to be considered. A more anatomic approach uses the terms diffuse or localized peritonitis, whereas functional aspects are focussed in terms such as primary, secondary or tertiary peritonitis. The most common type in a surgical institution is secondary peritonitis following perforations of a hollow viscus. Grading the severity of peritonitis by means of the APACHE II score will help predict outcome, determine therapeutic efficacy and in the comparison of different treatments.
