Resumo

A mass-separated ion source can eliminate the need for large mass separation units energetic ion beam system. The performance of a Colutron mass separated ion source employing a small Wein (E × B) velocity filter as the mass separation element, an einzel lens for focusing, and hohot-cathode, electron- bombardment ion source was studied. Mass separation and focusing capabilities were determined by mass spectra and ion image converter measurements. Emittance and perveance measurements of the total unit were made. The unit was operated with H2, He, H2O, Kr, and with BN in a charge holder in an H3 discharge (to study boron beams). Nearly parallel, μA-beams of masses up to about 12 amu and diameters from 3 to 5 mm were well resolved.
