ResumoIn the period 1972–1980, inclusive, the total catch on the North West Shelf was in the region of 165 × 103 tonnes, in the Timor Sea 17 × 103 tonnes and in the Arafura Sea 99 × 103 tonnes. Fishing effort has declined since the declaration of the Australian fishing zone (AFZ) in (1979). The C.P.U.E. in a 2.5 h−1 trawl averaged 1.3 tonnes of which up to 33% may have been discarded. Catches were dominated by Nemipteridae, Lutjanidae, Synodontidae and Carangidae, but in the Arafura Sea Loligo spp. have become of increasing importance in recent years. Average exploited standing stocks on the trawl grounds were 31 kg per ha, and a maximum sustainable yield may be in the region of 86 × 103 tonnes per year in the areas fished by the trawlers.
